About

Mayu Shviro

Born in Jerusalem of Japanese and Iraqi descent, Mayu started her classical western music studies on the cello when she was 6. She discovered modal music at the age of 18. Enchanted by the power and the beauty of these musical traditions she decided to focus on this style and began her musical journey with her cello through the Arabic, Turkish and Azeri traditions.

She has traveled to learn from masters of Ottoman music in Greece (Evgenious Voulgaris), and Azeri music in Azerbaijan (Elshan Mansurov).

She has performed and recorded various kinds of styles with many ensembles and artists (Piris Eliyahu, Shai Maestro, Ofer Mizrahi, Dudu Tassa & Jonny Greenwood, Soloist with the east and west orchestra, Arkho, Itamar Doari, Ross Daly, Kelly Thoma, Yonathan Avishai, Avishai Cohen (trumpet), and more).

Her first album "The old Man and the Sea" came out on 2024. Together with an animation film created by her, she takes the audience to a parallel universe. The piece is inspired by the Novel written by E. Hemingway.

These days she is creating her own music that is inspired by the traditions and people that crossed her way: Jazz, modal music, (Turkish, Azeri, Arabic) , and sounds of nature.
